Good News Translation
Jonathan did not want to give them an opportunity to penetrate his own territory, so he left Jerusalem and went to meet them in the region of Hamath.

New Revised Standard Version
So he marched away from Jerusalem and met them in the region of Hamath, for he gave them no opportunity to invade his own country.

Contemporary English Version
Jonathan did not want the king's army to invade Jerusalem, so he led his troops to the region around Hamath, where he saw the enemy camp.
