Clarke's Commentary on the BibleThe priest - shall eat it - From the expostulation of Moses with Aaron, Leviticus 10:17, we learn that the priest, by eating the sin-offering of the people, was considered as bearing their sin, and typically removing it from them: and besides, this was a part of their maintenance, or what the Scripture calls their inheritance; see Ezekiel 44:27-30. This was afterwards greatly abused; for improper persons endeavored to get into the priest's office merely that they might get a secular provision, which is a horrible profanity in the sight of God. See 1 Samuel 2:36; Jeremiah 23:12; Ezekiel 34:2-4; and Hosea 4:8. 1 Corinthians 9:13 Don't you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? Leviticus 6:17 It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share of the food offerings presented to me. Like the sin offering and the guilt offering, it is most holy. Leviticus 6:29 Any male in a priest's family may eat it; it is most holy. Leviticus 7:7 "'The same law applies to both the sin offering and the guilt offering: They belong to the priest who makes atonement with them. Leviticus 10:18 Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded."
