This is the burden against the Desert by the Sea: Like whirlwinds sweeping through the Negev, an invader comes from the desert, from a land of terror. | 1The oracle concerning the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds in the Negeb sweep on, it comes from the wilderness, from a terrible land. |
A dire vision is declared to me: “The traitor still betrays, and the destroyer still destroys. Go up, O Elam! Lay siege, O Media! I will put an end to all her groaning.” | 2A stern vision is told to me; the traitor betrays, and the destroyer destroys. Go up, O Elam; lay siege, O Media; all the sighing she has caused I bring to an end. |
Therefore my body is filled with anguish. Pain grips me, like the pains of a woman in labor. I am bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see. | 3Therefore my loins are filled with anguish; pangs have seized me, like the pangs of a woman in labor; I am bowed down so that I cannot hear; I am dismayed so that I cannot see. |
My heart falters; fear makes me tremble. The twilight of my desire has turned to horror. | 4My heart staggers; horror has appalled me; the twilight I longed for has been turned for me into trembling. |
They prepare a table, they lay out a carpet, they eat, they drink! Rise up, O princes, oil the shields! | 5They prepare the table, they spread the rugs, they eat, they drink. Arise, O princes; oil the shield! |
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees. | 6For thus the Lord said to me: “Go, set a watchman; let him announce what he sees. |
When he sees chariots with teams of horsemen, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, he must be alert, fully alert.” | 7When he sees riders, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently.” |
Then the lookout shouted: “Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower; night after night I stay at my post. | 8Then he who saw cried out: “Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord, continually by day, and at my post I am stationed whole nights. |
Look, here come the riders, horsemen in pairs.” And one answered, saying: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon! All the images of her gods lie shattered on the ground!” | 9And behold, here come riders, horsemen in pairs!” And he answered, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the carved images of her gods he has shattered to the ground.” |
O my people, crushed on the threshing floor, I tell you what I have heard from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel. | 10O my threshed and winnowed one, what I have heard from the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, I announce to you. |
This is the burden against Dumah: One calls to me from Seir, “Watchman, what is left of the night? Watchman, what is left of the night?” | 11The oracle concerning Dumah. One is calling to me from Seir, “Watchman, what time of the night? Watchman, what time of the night?” |
The watchman replies, “Morning has come, but also the night. If you would inquire, then inquire. Come back yet again.” | 12The watchman says: “Morning comes, and also the night. If you will inquire, inquire; come back again.” |
This is the burden against Arabia: In the thickets of Arabia you must lodge, O caravans of Dedanites. | 13The oracle concerning Arabia. In the thickets in Arabia you will lodge, O caravans of Dedanites. |
Bring water for the thirsty, O dwellers of Tema; meet the refugees with food. | 14To the thirsty bring water; meet the fugitive with bread, O inhabitants of the land of Tema. |
For they flee from the sword—the sword that is drawn—from the bow that is bent, and from the stress of battle. | 15For they have fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, from the bent bow, and from the press of battle. |
For this is what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a hired worker would count it, all the glory of Kedar will be gone. | 16For thus the Lord said to me, “Within a year, according to the years of a hired worker, all the glory of Kedar will come to an end. |
The remaining archers, the warriors of Kedar, will be few.” For the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken. | 17And the remainder of the archers of the mighty men of the sons of Kedar will be few, for the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken.” |
