Buildings for the worship of local or national gods. After settling in the promised land, Israel felt the need for a permanent building set apart for worship of the LORD. Three temples were built at different periods in Jerusalem. In the NT the individual believer (or the body of the church) is seen as the true temple or dwelling-place of God.
