Leuités: Levite

Original Word: Λευίτης
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: Leuités
Pronunciation: lay-oo-ee'-tace
Phonetic Spelling: (lyoo-ee'-tace)
Definition: a Levite, properly a man of the tribe of Levi; hence: a priest's assistant, an under priest, as the members of that tribe were charged with this duty.
Meaning: A Levite; a member of the tribe of Levi, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The Levites were set apart for religious duties and service in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Word Origin: Derived from Λευί (Leui), which is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Levi.

Corresponding Greek / Hebrew Entries: H3878 לֵוִי (Levi): Refers to Levi, the son of Jacob, and the tribe that descended from him.
H3881 לֵוִי (Leviy): Refers to the Levites, the members of the tribe of Levi, particularly those who served in the temple.

The Levites' legacy is one of service, dedication, and a unique role in the spiritual life of Israel, reflecting their enduring importance in biblical history and theology.

Usage: The term Λευίτης is used in the New Testament to refer to individuals who are descendants of Levi and are associated with the priestly and religious functions in Jewish society. It appears in contexts that highlight their roles and responsibilities.

Context: The Levites, originating from Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah, hold a significant place in biblical history and religious practice. In the Old Testament, the Levites were chosen by God to serve in various capacities related to worship and the maintenance of the tabernacle, and later the temple in Jerusalem. They were not allotted a specific territory like the other tribes but were given cities to dwell in across Israel (Numbers 35:1-8).

The Levites were divided into different families, each with specific duties. The descendants of Aaron, a Levite, were designated as priests, while the other Levites assisted in the broader religious and ceremonial functions. Their responsibilities included singing psalms, maintaining the temple, teaching the law, and acting as judges.

In the New Testament, the role of the Levites is less prominent but still acknowledged. For example, in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a Levite is mentioned as one who passed by the injured man (Luke 10:32). This reference underscores the expectation of religious duty and compassion associated with the Levites.

The Levites' dedication to service and worship is a recurring theme, symbolizing a life set apart for God. Their historical and religious significance is foundational to understanding the structure and function of Israelite worship and community life.
