Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, Yes, has God said…
I. THE SUBTLE TEMPTER. Changed the tree of probation into a tree of temptation.
II. THE FATAL TRANSGRESSION. Eve hesitated, and was drawn into the tempter's net. Then sin reproduces sin.
III. THE SAD DISCOVERY. Innocence gone: in its place was shame.
1. To obey God's word, even when it contradicts our own inclinations.
2. To be humble and patient, waiting God's time and will, as to His "secret things."
3. To refuse to listen to temptation from without, and to evil lusts in ourselves.
(W. S. Smith, B. D.)
Parallel VersesKJV: Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
