The characteristic of the Roman roads would be well known to the apostle, and this idea is given in the margin of the revision "holding a straight course in the word of truth." The expression denotes a fearless faithfulness — a simple straightforwardness in the proclamation of the truth of God, whatever may be the opinions or the conduct of men.
