Hebrews 4:9 There remains therefore a rest to the people of God. I. IT IS A FUTURE REST. It is not on this side the grave. This — it is emphatically said — this is not your rest. Ye have not yet come to the rest and to the inheritance which the Lord your God giveth you. We must go over Jordan — we must cross the river of death before we can reach our home. But till then, while we continue in the world, it is vain and fruitless to expect rest. There may be seasons of refreshment: pauses, like the Sabbath's pause, for recruiting our tired spirits; but these seasons and pauses are but for an instant. Work — work of one kind or other presses upon us, and we cannot, if we would, be long at rest. II. HEAVEN, whatever other notions we may have about it, WILL BE, BEFORE ALL THINGS, A PLACE TO REST.
