Genesis 3:9-12 And the LORD God called to Adam, and said to him, Where are you?… I. ADAM REPRESENTS THE AVERAGE SINNER. A man may do worse than Adam — hide from God after outraging Him by sin. Sense of God's presence, awfulness, greatness, still intact in soul. II. THEY HID THEMSELVES. An instinct; not the result of a consultation. Two motives: 1. Fear. 2. Shame. The greatness of God was the measure of Adam's fear; his own lost greatness was the measure of his shame. III. AMONGST THE TREES OF THE GARDEN. 1. Pleasure. 2. Occupation. 3. Moral rationalism. IV. ADAM'S CONDUCT WAS FOOLISH AND IRRATIONAL. 1. Attempting the impossible. 2. Flying from the one hope and opening for restoration and safety. (Canon Liddon.)
