Luke 4:3 And the devil said to him, If you be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. I. The first step towards God is faith in Him and His love. The first step away from Him is doubt. Therefore the devil begins all temptation by seeking to inspire the human soul with doubt. He sought to make Eve doubt God's loving purpose towards her by his "Yea, hath God said?" II. 1. How often are we tempted to doubt God's love! Especially is this the case when we are left for a time without any sensible tokens of His presence. 2. How shall we meet this temptation? By reliance on the Word and the promise of God. Is there not in His Word food for the hungry, solace for the lonely, comfort for the desponding? (Canon Vernon Hutton, M. A.)
