It is reasonable to seek the origin of the idea in the first passage in which the term occurs (Isaiah 41:8). Here there can be no doubt as to what the term denotes. It denotes the Israelitish nation, treated, however, not as the mere aggregate of the members composing it, but as a unity, developing historically, and maintaining its continuity and essential character through successive generations.
