For as much as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,…


St. Luke had no authority to suppress these other Gospels, nor does he reprehend or calumniate them; but he writes the truth simply, and leaves it to outswear falsehood; and so it has done. Moses' rod has devoured the conjurors' rods, and St. Luke's story still retains the majesty of the Maker, and theirs are not.
