The youngest of them got very tired on the way back; I thought he would fairly give in, and that I would have to carry him. As we were crossing the valley we came within sight of home, a mile and a half off. I said, "Shall we run and see who will be home first?" He put his hand in mine, and we started off with this idea: "We will be home before the boys." On we went, leaping over streams, jumping over every boulder, on and on across the fields.
