Light and Liberty
1 Thessalonians 5:5
You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Going to Helena I saw piles of boxes and goods on the landing, and I said to the superintendent, "Do the slaves buy as much as their masters used to do for them?" "A great deal more." "And what things do they buy?" "Looking glasses and candles." "Looking glasses, of course; candles, however!" said

I. "What do they want with candles?" "In the old slave times, a slave was never allowed a light in his cabin unless it were a fire, and the candles became in their sight the signal of liberty, and the moment they were free they said, 'Give us light.'"

(H. W. Beecher.)
