Psalm 72:17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him… The language of this psalm cannot be confined to Solomon: it speaks of him only as he was in office or character the type of Christ. The full meaning of the psalm belongs to Christ alone. By the name of Christ, His chief greatness or excellency, His peculiar honour and glory, is meant. Now, such glory has been given to Christ — I. BY GOD THE FATHER. 1. In the eternal counsels. 2. At His baptism. 3. On the Mount Of Transfiguration. 4. By the Resurrection. II. FROM THE ANGELS OF GOD. Their knowledge, their security, have been furthered by Christ in His redeeming work. III. FROM THE REDEEMED AMONG MEN. Through their justification and sanctification they become witnesses to the glory and greatness of the Redeemer. (J. Bannerman, D. D.)
