Jeremiah 1:4-10 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,… 1. He is made a (paqid), a prefect or superintendent of the nations of the world. A Hebrew term corresponding to "bishop" of the Christian Church. 2. He has widest scope for the exercise of his powers: he is invested with authority over the destinies of all peoples. If it be asked in what sense it could be truly said that the ruin and renascence of nations was subject to the supervision of the prophets, the answer is obvious. The Word they were authorised to declare was the Word of God, that fulfils itself with all the necessity of a law of nature (Isaiah 55:10, 11). 3. What strength, what staying power may the Christian preacher find in dwelling upon this fact, that God's Word is fulfilling itself, though that Word may be disowned, and the efforts of the preacher may be thwarted.
