4 John (YHWH is gracious) the Baptist appeared in the wilderness (solitary place), preaching a baptism (submersion) of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 People went out to him from all of Jerusalem (city of peace) and the countryside of Judea (land of praise). Confessing their sins, they were baptized (submerged) by him in the Jordan (flowing down) River. 6 John (YHWH is gracious) was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist.
