8 And beyond the Jordan (flowing down), east of Jericho (city of palms), they designated Bezer (gold ore) on the wilderness plateau from the tribe of Reuben (behold a son), Ramoth (heights) in Gilead (rocky region) from the tribe of Gad (troop), and Golan (their captivity) in Bashan (fruitful) from the tribe of Manasseh (causing to forget). 9 These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites (God prevails) and foreigners among them, so that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
