17 Shem's descendants were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.

18 Arpachshad fathered Shelah and Shelah fathered Eber.

19 Eber fathered two sons. The name of the one was Peleg (because the earth was divided during his lifetime) and his brother was named Joktan.

20 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,

21 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,

22 Ebal, Abimael, Sheba,

23 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab—all of these were Joktan's descendants.

24 In summary, Shem fathered Arpachshad, who fathered Shelah,

25 who fathered Eber, who fathered Peleg, who fathered Reu,

26 who fathered Serug, who fathered Nahor, who fathered Terah,

27 who fathered Abram—that is, Abraham.
