Go to the ant, O slothful one, || See her ways and be wise; Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
Which has no captain, overseer, and ruler, Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
She prepares her bread in summer, || She has gathered her food in harvest. she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
Until when, O slothful one, do you lie? When do you arise from your sleep? How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber, || A little clasping of the hands to rest, A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—
And your poverty has come as a traveler, || And your want as an armed man. and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
