1 The words of Gatherer the son of Vomiter. The vision which the man spoke with whom God is, and who being strengthened by God, abiding with him, said: The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle. The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out. The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance. This man’s utterance to Ithiel: “I am weary, God, but I can prevail.
2 I am the most foolish of men, and the wisdom of men is not with me. Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. Surely I am only a brute, not a man; I do not have human understanding.
3 I have not learned wisdom, and have not known the science of saints. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? who hath held the wind in his hands? who hath bound up the waters together as in a garment? who hath raised up all the borders of the earth? what is his name, and what is the name of his son, if thou knowest? Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Whose hands have gathered up the wind? Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!
5 Every word of God is fire tried: he is a buckler to them that hope in him. Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Add not any thing to his words, lest thou be reproved, and found a liar: Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
7 Two things I have asked of thee, deny them not to me before I die. Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die: “Two things I ask of you, LORD; do not refuse me before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life: Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.
9 Lest perhaps being filled, I should be tempted to deny, and say: Who is the Lord? or being compelled by poverty, I should steal, and forswear the name of my God. lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
