1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. The proverbs of Solomon. 2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death. Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death. Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death.
3 Yahweh will not allow the soul of the righteous to go hungry, but he thrusts away the desire of the wicked. The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
4 He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, but the hand of the diligent brings wealth. A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.
5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during the harvest is a son who causes shame. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame. He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
