Ah, the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley of those overcome with wine! Woe to the proud crown of the habitually drunk of Ephraim, And to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, Which is at the head of the fertile valley Of those who are overcome with wine!	Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley— to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!
2	Behold, the Lord has one who is strong and mighty. Like a hailstorm or destructive tempest, like a driving rain or flooding downpour, he will smash that crown to the ground.	Behold, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong; like a storm of hail, a destroying tempest, like a storm of mighty, overflowing waters, he casts down to the earth with his hand.	Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, <i>which</i> as a tempest of hail <i>and</i> a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.	Behold, the Lord has a strong and mighty <i>agent;</i> As a storm of hail, a tempest of destruction, Like a storm of mighty overflowing waters, He has thrown <i>it</i> down to the earth with <i>His</i> hand.	See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong. Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind, like a driving rain and a flooding downpour, he will throw it forcefully to the ground.
3	The majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards will be trampled underfoot.	The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trodden underfoot;	The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:	The splendid crown of the habitually drunk of Ephraim is trampled underfoot.	That wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards, will be trampled underfoot.
4	The fading flower of his beautiful splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, will be like a ripe fig before the summer harvest: Whoever sees it will take it in his hand and swallow it.	and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley, will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer: when someone sees it, he swallows it as soon as it is in his hand.	And the glorious beauty, which <i>is</i> on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, <i>and</i> as the hasty fruit before the summer; which <i>when</i> he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.	And the fading flower of its glorious beauty, Which is at the head of the fertile valley, Will be like the first-ripe fig prior to the summer, Which one sees, <i>And</i> as soon as it is in his hand, He swallows it.	That fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley, will be like figs ripe before harvest— as soon as people see them and take them in hand, they swallow them.
5	On that day the LORD of Hosts will be a crown of glory, a diadem of splendor to the remnant of His people,	In that day the LORD of hosts will be a crown of glory, and a diadem of beauty, to the remnant of his people,	In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,	On that day the LORD of armies will become a beautiful crown And a glorious wreath to the remnant of His people;	In that day the LORD Almighty will be a glorious crown, a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people.
6	a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and a strength to those who repel the onslaught at the gate.	and a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.	And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.	A spirit of justice for him who sits in judgment, A strength to those who repel the onslaught at the gate.	He will be a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
7	These also stagger from wine and stumble from strong drink: Priests and prophets reel from strong drink and are befuddled by wine. They stumble because of strong drink, muddled in their visions and stumbling in their judgments.	These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed by wine, they stagger with strong drink, they reel in vision, they stumble in giving judgment.	But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble <i>in</i> judgment.	And these also reel with wine and stagger from intoxicating drink: The priest and the prophet reel with intoxicating drink, They are confused by wine, they stagger from intoxicating drink; They reel while having visions, They stagger <i>when rendering</i> a verdict.	And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions.
8	For all their tables are covered with vomit; there is not a place without filth.	For all tables are full of filthy vomit, with no space left.	For all tables are full of vomit <i>and</i> filthiness, <i>so that there is</i> no place <i>clean</i>.	For all the tables are full of filthy vomit, without a <i>single clean</i> place.	All the tables are covered with vomit and there is not a spot without filth.
9	Whom is He trying to teach? To whom is He explaining His message? To infants just weaned from milk? To babies removed from the breast?	“To whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, those taken from the breast?	Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? <i>them that are</i> weaned from the milk, <i>and</i> drawn from the breasts.	“To whom would He teach knowledge, And to whom would He interpret the message? Those <i>just</i> weaned from milk? Those <i>just</i> taken from the breast?	“Who is it he is trying to teach? To whom is he explaining his message? To children weaned from their milk, to those just taken from the breast?
10	For they hear: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there.”	For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”	For precept <i>must be</i> upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, <i>and</i> there a little:	“For <i>He says,</i> ‘Order on order, order on order, Line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there.’”	For it is: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there.”
11	Indeed, with mocking lips and foreign tongues, He will speak to this people	For by people of strange lips and with a foreign tongue the LORD will speak to this people,	For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.	Indeed, He will speak to this people Through stammering lips and a foreign tongue,	Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people,
12	to whom He has said: “This is the place of rest, let the weary rest; this is the place of repose.” But they would not listen.	to whom he has said, “This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose”; yet they would not hear.	To whom he said, This <i>is</i> the rest <i>wherewith</i> ye may cause the weary to rest; and this <i>is</i> the refreshing: yet they would not hear.	He who said to them, “This is the place of quiet, give rest to the weary,” And, “This is the resting place,” but they would not listen.	to whom he said, “This is the resting place, let the weary rest\|; and, “This is the place of repose\|— but they would not listen.
13	Then the word of the LORD to them will become: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there,” so that they will go stumbling backward and will be injured, ensnared, and captured.	And the word of the LORD will be to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little, that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.	But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, <i>and</i> there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.	So the word of the LORD to them will be, “Order on order, order on order, Line on line, line on line, A little here, a little there,” That they may go and stumble backward, be broken, snared, and taken captive.	So then, the word of the LORD to them will become: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there— so that as they go they will fall backward; they will be injured and snared and captured.
14	Therefore hear the word of the LORD, O scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.	Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers, who rule this people in Jerusalem!	Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which <i>is</i> in Jerusalem.	Therefore, hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers, Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,	Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.
15	For you said, “We have made a covenant with death; we have fashioned an agreement with Sheol. When the overwhelming scourge passes through it will not touch us, because we have made lies our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.”	Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;	Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:	Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we have made a pact. The gushing flood will not reach us when it passes by, Because we have made falsehood our refuge and we have concealed ourselves with deception.”	You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.”
16	So this is what the Lord GOD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; the one who believes will never be shaken.	therefore thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’	Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner <i>stone</i>, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.	Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, A precious cornerstone <i>for</i> the foundation, firmly placed. The one who believes <i>in it</i> will not be disturbed.	So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.
17	I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the level. Hail will sweep away your refuge of lies, and water will flood your hiding place.	And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.”	Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.	“I will make justice the measuring line And righteousness the level; Then hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters will overflow the secret place.	I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place.
18	Your covenant with death will be dissolved, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be trampled by it.	Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be beaten down by it.	And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.	“Your covenant with death will be canceled, And your pact with Sheol will not stand; When the gushing flood passes through, Then you will become its trampling <i>ground.</i>	Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it.
19	As often as it passes through, it will carry you away; it will sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.	As often as it passes through it will take you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be sheer terror to understand the message.	From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only <i>to</i> understand the report.	“As often as it passes through, it will seize you; For morning after morning it will pass through, <i>anytime</i> during the day or night, And it will be sheer terror to understand what it means.”	As often as it comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
20	Indeed, the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket too small to wrap around you.	For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on, and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in.	For the bed is shorter than that <i>a man</i> can stretch himself <i>on it</i>: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself <i>in it</i>.	The bed is too short on which to stretch out, And the blanket is too small to wrap oneself in.	The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.
21	For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim. He will rouse Himself as in the Valley of Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His task, His disturbing task.	For the LORD will rise up as on Mount Perazim; as in the Valley of Gibeon he will be roused; to do his deed—strange is his deed! and to work his work—alien is his work!	For the LORD shall rise up as <i>in</i> mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as <i>in</i> the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.	For the LORD will rise up as <i>at</i> Mount Perazim, He will be stirred up as in the Valley of Gibeon, To do His task, His unusual task, And to work His work, His extraordinary work.	The LORD will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon— to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task.
22	So now, do not mock, or your shackles will become heavier. Indeed, I have heard from the Lord GOD of Hosts a decree of destruction against the whole land.	Now therefore do not scoff, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard a decree of destruction from the Lord GOD of hosts against the whole land.	Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.	And now do not carry on as scoffers, Or your shackles will be made stronger; For I have heard from the Lord GOD of armies Of decisive destruction on all the earth.	Now stop your mocking, or your chains will become heavier; the Lord, the LORD Almighty, has told me of the destruction decreed against the whole land.
23	Listen and hear my voice. Pay attention and hear what I say.	Give ear, and hear my voice; give attention, and hear my speech.	Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.	Listen and hear my voice, Pay attention and hear my words.	Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.
24	Does the plowman plow for planting every day? Does he continuously loosen and harrow the soil?	Does he who plows for sowing plow continually? Does he continually open and harrow his ground?	Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?	Does the farmer plow continually to plant seed? Does he <i>continually</i> turn and break up his ground?	When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually? Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil?
25	When he has leveled its surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin? He plants wheat in rows and barley in plots, and rye within its border.	When he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter dill, sow cumin, and put in wheat in rows and barley in its proper place, and emmer as the border?	When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?	Does he not level its surface And sow dill and scatter cumin And plant wheat in rows, Barley in its place and rye within its area?	When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin? Does he not plant wheat in its place, barley in its plot, and spelt in its field?
26	For his God instructs and teaches him properly.	For he is rightly instructed; his God teaches him.	For his God doth instruct him to discretion, <i>and</i> doth teach him.	For his God instructs and teaches him properly.	His God instructs him and teaches him the right way.
27	Surely caraway is not threshed with a sledge, and the wheel of a cart is not rolled over the cumin. But caraway is beaten out with a stick, and cumin with a rod.	Dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart wheel rolled over cumin, but dill is beaten out with a stick, and cumin with a rod.	For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.	For dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, Nor is the cartwheel driven over cumin; But dill is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a club.	Caraway is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin; caraway is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a stick.
28	Grain for bread must be ground, but it is not endlessly threshed. Though the wheels of the cart roll over it, the horses do not crush it.	Does one crush grain for bread? No, he does not thresh it forever; when he drives his cart wheel over it with his horses, he does not crush it.	Bread <i>corn</i> is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break <i>it with</i> the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it <i>with</i> his horsemen.	<i>Grain for</i> bread is crushed, Indeed, he does not continue to thresh it forever. Because the wheel of <i>his</i> cart and his horses <i>eventually</i> damage <i>it,</i> He does not thresh it <i>longer.</i>	Grain must be ground to make bread; so one does not go on threshing it forever. The wheels of a threshing cart may be rolled over it, but one does not use horses to grind grain.
29	This also comes from the LORD of Hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.	This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.	This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, <i>which</i> is wonderful in counsel, <i>and</i> excellent in working.	This also comes from the LORD of armies, <i>Who</i> has made <i>His</i> counsel wonderful and <i>His</i> wisdom great.	All this also comes from the LORD Almighty, whose plan is wonderful, whose wisdom is magnificent.
