The God of All Comfort

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;3Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.
4who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.4who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.4who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.4He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
5For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.5For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.5For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.5For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.5For as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so through Christ our comfort also overflows.
6If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.6If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.6But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer;6And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.6If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is experienced in your endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer.

7And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.7Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.7and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort.7And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.7And our hope for you is firm, because we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you will share in the comfort.
8We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.8For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself.8For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life;8For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:8For we don't want you to be unaware, brothers, of our affliction that took place in Asia: we were completely overwhelmed--beyond our strength--so that we even despaired of life.
9Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.9Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.9indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead;9But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:9Indeed, we personally had a death sentence within ourselves, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.
10He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us,10He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.10who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us,10Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;10He has delivered us from such a terrible death, and He will deliver us. We have put our hope in Him that He will deliver us again
11as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.11You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.11you also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many.11Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.11while you join in helping us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gift that came to us through the prayers of many.

Paul's Change of Plans

12Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God's grace.12For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.12For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you.12For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.12For this is our confidence: The testimony of our conscience is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with God-given sincerity and purity, not by fleshly wisdom but by God's grace.
13For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that,13For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand—13For we write nothing else to you than what you read and understand, and I hope you will understand until the end;13For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;13Now we are writing nothing to you other than what you can read and also understand. I hope you will understand completely--
14as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.14just as you did partially understand us—that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.14just as you also partially did understand us, that we are your reason to be proud as you also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.14As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.14as you have partially understood us--that we are your reason for pride, as you are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.
15Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you first so that you might benefit twice.15Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace.15In this confidence I intended at first to come to you, so that you might twice receive a blessing;15And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;15I planned with this confidence to come to you first, so you could have a double benefit,

16I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea.16I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea.16that is, to pass your way into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and by you to be helped on my journey to Judea.16And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.16and to go on to Macedonia with your help, then come to you again from Macedonia and be given a start by you on my journey to Judea.
17Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner so that in the same breath I say both "Yes, yes" and "No, no"?17Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time?17Therefore, I was not vacillating when I intended to do this, was I? Or what I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, so that with me there will be yes, yes and no, no at the same time?17When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?17So when I planned this, was I irresponsible? Or what I plan, do I plan in a purely human way so that I say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" simultaneously?
18But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No."18As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No.18But as God is faithful, our word to you is not yes and no.18But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.18As God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes and no."
19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us--by me and Silas and Timothy--was not "Yes" and "No," but in him it has always been "Yes."19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes.19For the Son of God, Christ Jesus, who was preached among you by us-- by me and Silvanus and Timothy-- was not yes and no, but is yes in Him.19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us--by me and Silvanus and Timothy--did not become "Yes and no"; on the contrary, a final "Yes" has come in Him.
20For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.20For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.20For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us.20For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.20For every one of God's promises is "Yes" in Him. Therefore, the "Amen" is also spoken through Him by us for God's glory.

21Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,21And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us,21Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,21Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;21Now it is God who strengthens us, with you, in Christ and has anointed us.
22set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.22and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.22who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.22Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.22He has also sealed us and given us the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts.
23I call God as my witness--and I stake my life on it--that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.23But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth.23But I call God as witness to my soul, that to spare you I did not come again to Corinth.23Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.23I call on God as a witness, on my life, that it was to spare you that I did not come to Corinth.
24Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.24Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.24Not that we lord it over your faith, but are workers with you for your joy; for in your faith you are standing firm.24Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.24I do not mean that we have control of your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand by faith.
