Interwoven Gospels This also is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to inquire of him, "Who art thou?" And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, "I am not the Christ." And they asked him, "What then? Art thou Elijah?" And he saith, "I am not." "Art thou the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." They said therefore to him, "Who art thou? That we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou concerning thyself?" He answered, "I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as said Isaiah the prophet." Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said to him, "Why, then, dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them, saying, "I baptize in water: but in the midst of you standeth He whom ye know not: the One coming after me, of Whom I am not worthy to loose the latchet of His sandal." These things occurred at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. On the morrow, he seeth Jesus coming to him, and saith, "Behold the Lamb of God, Who taketh away the sin of the world. This is He of Whom I said, 'After me cometh a Man Who hath taken precedence over me; because He was before me." And I knew Him not; but that He should be manifested to Israel, therefore I came baptizing in water." And John testified, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and it abode upon Him. And I knew Him not; but He Who sent me to baptize in water, the same said to me, 'Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding upon Him, the same is He who baptizeth in the Holy Spirit." And I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God." Adapted from The Interwoven Gospels © Books for Living, Inc. Digital Edition by V. Gilbert Beers, © 2009 Bible Studio, LLC.
