Judson Mission Voyage (1812)

On February 19, 1812, Adoniram Judson (23) and his new wife, Ann (22), sailed from New England aboard the brig Caravan, bound for Calcutta, India. They were among the first missionaries sent from America, leaving behind family ties, familiar comforts, and any guarantee of safety. Their departure marked a turning point in American Protestant missions, proving that ordinary believers could undertake extraordinary obedience when compelled by Christ’s command and upheld by God’s promises.

The months at sea demanded steadfastness: sickness, storms, delay, and uncertainty tested their resolve. Yet their aim was clear—to carry the gospel to those who had never heard the name of Christ. Their voyage embodied the spirit of, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). Such courage was not mere adventure, but faith expressed through costly action.

From Calcutta to Burma (Myanmar)

Though first bound for Calcutta, the Judsons’ path soon opened toward Burma, where the work would become both costly and enduring. In a land marked by spiritual darkness and cultural barriers, they pursued patient witness, learned languages, and pressed on through opposition and loss. Judson’s Scripture translation would become a cornerstone for generations, showing the lasting power of God’s Word when carried with humility and persistence.
