Ordination in Chicago (1909)

On January 2, 1909, in Chicago, Illinois, nineteen-year-old Aimee Elizabeth Kennedy Semple and her husband, Robert James Semple, were ordained to Christian ministry through the laying on of hands by evangelist William H. Durham. In a time when many doubted the wisdom of affirming a young woman’s call, the church recognized that God’s summons is not limited by age, social expectation, or human preference.

William H. Durham and the Church’s Witness

Durham, a prominent Chicago evangelist in the early Pentecostal renewal, emphasized Christ’s finished work and the Spirit’s power for holy living and witness. His participation signaled that this commissioning was not mere sentiment, but a sober act of ecclesial responsibility: to pray, discern, and set apart servants for gospel labor. Scripture ties such moments to spiritual stewardship: “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the elders.” (1 Timothy 4:14)

Aimee and Robert Semple

Aimee’s zeal for evangelism and compassion for the lost were already evident, even as she faced the vulnerabilities of youth and the scrutiny often placed upon women who spoke publicly about God’s call. Robert, likewise, embraced a life not of comfort but of obedience, joining his wife in a shared vocation marked by prayer, fasting, and a willingness to be spent for Christ.

Leaving Home for Overseas Mission

Soon after their ordination, the Semples left familiar support to carry the gospel overseas, trusting God for provision and protection. Their departure reflected the pattern seen in the church at Antioch: “So after they had fasted and prayed, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” (Acts 13:3) Such sending is a form of spiritual heroism—quiet, costly, and rooted in faith rather than applause.

Legacy of Courageous Dependence

Hard trials would come, including severe hardship on the mission field and deep personal loss, yet this Chicago commissioning stands as a steadfast beginning. It reminds believers that God equips those He calls, and that obedience often precedes understanding. “And who knows but that you have come to your position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)
