Love Better Than Life

Francis Asbury (1745–1816)

Francis Asbury was a Methodist preacher sent from England to the American colonies in 1771. When the Revolutionary War unsettled churches and communities, he became known for staying near the flocks others could no longer reach. Later recognized as a leading organizer of American Methodism, he served as an itinerant shepherd who treated scattered believers as a true spiritual family, not a passing audience.

Revolutionary War Ministry (1775–1783)

As conflict spread through places like Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, travel grew dangerous and suspicion fell on British-born ministers. Many sought safety, returned home, or withdrew from public preaching. Asbury remained, moving carefully through backroads and rural circuits, often dependent on the hospitality of ordinary Christians. Short supplies, sickness, harsh weather, and the constant risk of being questioned or detained became familiar companions.

His heroism was not loud. It was the steady courage of showing up—praying in homes, preaching Christ in small gatherings, strengthening class meetings, and urging holiness when fear and bitterness tempted hearts. He labored to keep believers anchored to Scripture, repentance, and a living faith rather than political anger or despair.

Quiet Testimony and Enduring Influence

In the midst of upheaval, Asbury recorded a simple testimony that still summons bravery: “My soul lives constantly as in the presence of God, and enjoys much of His divine favor. His love is better than life!” The strength behind his ministry was not comfort or certainty, but communion—daily nearness to the Lord that made endurance an act of worship.

His words echo David’s confession: “Because Your loving devotion is better than life, my lips will glorify You.” (Psalm 63:3). They also reflect the fearless steadiness Scripture commends: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7).

By treasuring Christ above safety, Asbury modeled steadfast ministry: serve where God places you, love people at personal cost, and let the presence of God be the soul’s hiding place.
