John Gabriel Perboyre, A Shepherd Who Would Not Yield John Gabriel Perboyre (1802–1840) John Gabriel Perboyre was a French missionary of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians/Lazarists) who served in central China during a period when the Qing authorities treated Christian preaching as a threat to public order. Gentle in manner yet firm in conviction, he moved among ordinary people, teaching the Scriptures, catechizing converts, and strengthening small congregations that often lived under quiet suspicion. Arrest and Imprisonment in Wuchang In 1839 Perboyre was arrested and carried to Wuchang, a fortified city on the Yangtze River (in today’s Wuhan area, Hubei). He endured repeated interrogations, beatings, and torture meant to force a denial of Christ and the naming of fellow believers. Public shame accompanied the pain: he was chained and made to wear the heavy cangue, a wooden collar that restricted movement and marked him as a criminal. Yet his captivity became a kind of chapel. Witnesses remembered his steady patience, his refusal to curse those who harmed him, and his habit of prayer—both for fellow prisoners and for the very men who guarded him. In a setting designed to break courage, he practiced the courage of meekness, bearing wrong without surrendering truth. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…” (Matthew 10:28). Execution and Christian Witness (September 11, 1840) After months of confinement, Perboyre was condemned as a “teacher of the faith,” a charge that named the true reason for his punishment: he proclaimed Jesus as Lord. On September 11, 1840, he was executed at Wuchang by strangulation. The method was meant to silence a message; instead it sealed it, turning testimony into martyrdom. Legacy of Faithful Perseverance Perboyre’s life commends steadfastness, love for enemies, and hope beyond suffering. “I consider that our present sufferings are not comparable to the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18). His witness reminds the Church that the gospel is worth everything, because Jesus is Lord. |
