Hands Laid in Hope

Background and Agreement

In the years after World War II, the Philippines faced deep wounds—cities broken, families scattered, and churches rebuilding alongside the nation. The Philippine Independent Church (Iglesia Filipina Independiente, IFI), long committed to serving Filipino believers in their own tongue and setting, sought closer fellowship with the Episcopal Church. A formal agreement opened a path for cooperation in worship, pastoral care, and mission, while honoring distinct histories and responsibilities.

The Consecration of April 7, 1948

On April 7, 1948, the Episcopal Church consecrated three Filipino bishops for the IFI. In a reverent service centered on Scripture, prayer, and the laying on of hands, the churches affirmed the historic pastoral office of bishop and extended the ancient line of apostolic succession. The act was not a display of power, but a sober trust: that Christ shepherds His people through ordained servants who preach the Word, administer the sacraments, and guard the flock with humility and courage.

Individuals, Place, and Postwar Courage

The three bishops—Filipino pastors called to oversee Filipino dioceses—stepped into leadership when stability was fragile and the needs were immense. Churches required rebuilding, clergy required training, and congregations required comfort amid grief. Episcopal bishops and clergy, many of whom had also endured the hardships of wartime ministry, stood with them as brothers in Christ. The quiet heroism of the day was spiritual: choosing unity over suspicion, rebuilding over retreat, and service over self-protection.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Lasting Significance

This consecration strengthened the IFI’s ministry with a deeper continuity in the Church’s historic order, while encouraging cooperation in evangelism, education, and pastoral care. It also offered a public witness that reconciliation is possible after conflict, because the gospel endures and Christ remains faithful.

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)
