Gospel Proclaimed in Times Square

New York City Crusade (1957)

Beginning in mid-May 1957, evangelist Billy Graham launched a New York City crusade that quickly outgrew its scheduled run, continuing for sixteen weeks and drawing nearly two million attendees across multiple meetings. Services were held in major venues such as Madison Square Garden and overflow gatherings, as the message was carried into the city’s public life. The preaching was marked by a steady emphasis on the new birth, the authority of Scripture, and a direct invitation to respond to Christ.

Graham’s central appeal echoed the Lord’s own call: “Repent and believe in the gospel!” (Mark 1:15). Night after night, counselors and church volunteers received those who came forward, helping inquirers understand repentance, faith, and the cost of discipleship. The crusade’s persistence became a kind of spiritual endurance—pressing on when it would have been easier to conclude, trusting that God still gathers His people even in crowded, skeptical places.

Times Square Rally (September 1, 1957)

On September 1, 1957, the crusade concluded with a massive rally in Times Square, bringing gospel proclamation to one of the world’s most visible crossroads. Surrounded by neon signs, traffic, and constant motion, the gathering stood as a public testimony that Christ is not confined to private devotion but is Lord over every street and nation. Many responded openly, confessing faith before others, a step that required real courage amid the pressures of city life.

The location itself underscored the theme of bold witness: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). In a setting shaped by commerce and entertainment, the call to surrender to Jesus Christ confronted the deeper hunger of the soul.

People, Prayer, and Public Faith

The crusade welcomed believers from many backgrounds and included a notable moment of public prayer from Martin Luther King Jr., reflecting a shared conviction that the gospel must be spoken with clarity and love. The event highlighted Christian virtues of faith, repentance, unity in essentials, and steadfast hope—reminding the church that Christ still seeks the lost and strengthens the saints, even in the heart of a restless city.
