God and Man Made One

George Whitefield and the Awakening (1740)

On May 21, 1740, George Whitefield, the English evangelist whose preaching helped ignite the Great Awakening, wrote a sentence that distilled the wonder of redemption: “He was God and man in one person, that God and man might be happy together again.” The line reflects the central Christian confession that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man—one Person, two natures—so that estranged sinners might be reconciled to a holy God.

Whitefield was then in the midst of strenuous itinerant ministry across Britain and the American colonies, preaching in churches, fields, and open air assemblies when pulpits were closed to him. His travels demanded endurance and courage: long miles, harsh weather, criticism from polite society, and spiritual opposition. Yet his public boldness sprang from private devotion—prayer, Scripture, and a deep sense of Christ’s compassion for the lost.

“God and Man Happy Together Again”

Whitefield’s phrase does not treat doctrine as mere theory. It points to restored fellowship, the healing of a real rupture caused by sin. The Son of God took on true humanity to bear sin, satisfy justice, and bring believers near to the Father. “But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Reconciliation is not wishful thinking; it is purchased peace.

This union of deity and humanity also means Christ can truly represent us and truly save us. “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5). Whitefield preached a Savior who is able to sympathize, mighty to rescue, and near to all who call.

Fruit in Worship and Witness

Whitefield’s ministry shaped communities—miners, merchants, and magistrates alike—calling people to repentance, faith, and joyful assurance. His “heroism” was not self-made bravado but humble perseverance: proclaiming Christ plainly, weeping over souls, and inviting all to come.

The invitation remains: through Jesus, guilt is forgiven, hearts are renewed, and joy is restored. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
