Faithful Witness at Jibla Hospital Jibla Hospital Shootings (2002) On December 30, 2002, an Islamic militant entered the Baptist-run Jibla Hospital in Jibla, Yemen, and carried out a targeted attack on American Christian workers serving there. Administrator William Koehn, supplies purchaser Kathleen Gariety, and physician Martha Myers were executed, each shot in the head. Pharmacist Donald Caswell was also shot, gravely wounded in the abdomen, and later recovered. The attacker fled but was later arrested, convicted, and sentenced for the murders. Jibla Hospital had long been known locally for compassionate medical care offered without favoritism—treatment for ordinary families, the poor, and the vulnerable. The attack therefore struck not only individuals, but a visible expression of mercy that had been quietly present in a difficult place. The Workers William Koehn served in hospital leadership, helping keep staffing, facilities, and daily operations steady so patients could receive care with dignity. Kathleen Gariety’s work in purchasing and supplies ensured medicines and necessities were on hand—an often unseen ministry that keeps mercy practical and dependable. Dr. Martha Myers, as a physician, embodied patient-facing service: listening, diagnosing, treating, and bearing the burdens of suffering people. Donald Caswell, a pharmacist, likewise served at the intersection of science and compassion, helping ensure treatments were safe and available. Their roles differed, but their shared calling was clear: to love their neighbors through healing work, in a setting where such love carried real risk. Legacy and Witness Their deaths reminded the Church that gospel mercy is often carried out in dangerous places, and that faithful service to the sick and poor can become a costly testimony. Their example calls believers to sober courage, prayerful steadiness, and love that does not depend on safety or applause. “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) May their memory strengthen steadfast love, wise perseverance, and intercession for those who continue serving Christ among the suffering. |
