Faithful Teacher Across Two Shores

Death in Tianjin (1895)

On June 2, 1895, Christian educator Zeng Laishun died in Tianjin, ending a life marked by steady service to Christ’s church on both sides of the Pacific. Tianjin, a growing port city shaped by rapid change and competing influences, was a fitting final setting for a man who labored for clarity, faithfulness, and peace. His passing was not the close of a public spectacle, but of a quietly heroic vocation: honoring the Lord through perseverance.

Teacher of Faithful Learning

Zeng’s work as an educator testified that Christian instruction is meant to form the whole person. He pressed students and fellow believers toward learning that strengthens conviction, disciplines the mind, and renews the heart. In an era when schooling could be reduced to status or utility, his witness insisted that knowledge finds its purpose in obedience. “Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23). For Zeng, scholarship was not separate from discipleship; it was one of its tools.

Service in China and the United States

Having served believers in both China and the United States, Zeng helped demonstrate that the church is not confined by language or geography. He encouraged unity among Christians who faced the strains of distance, cultural misunderstanding, and the demands of building congregational life in new places. His cross-Pacific ministry modeled the patient work of translation—of words, yes, but also of habits, expectations, and spiritual counsel—so that faith could be lived plainly where God had placed His people.

Integrity in Business and Administration

Zeng also carried his witness into business and administrative responsibilities in China. Amid demanding pressures, he pursued integrity, wise stewardship, and peaceable leadership, resisting the temptations of expediency and self-protection. His heroism was the courage to remain trustworthy when compromise would have been easier, to seek fairness when suspicion ran high, and to aim for peace without surrendering principle.

Legacy of Unshowy Heroism

Zeng’s life reminds the church that lasting fruit often grows from uncelebrated faithfulness. “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord…your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). His example encourages believers to serve with constancy—strengthening Christ’s people through teaching, stewardship, and persevering love until the end.
