Isaac Backus (1724–1806)

Isaac Backus was a New England farmer’s son who came of age during the evangelical revivals later called the Great Awakening. Though outwardly industrious and respectable, he carried an inward weight—an acute awareness of guilt before God and the fear that he remained spiritually lost. His later ministry showed a steady, courageous concern for truth, a pastor’s tenderness toward troubled consciences, and a reformer’s willingness to suffer misunderstanding for the sake of biblical conviction.

Conversion in the Field (August 24, 1741)

On August 24, 1741, Backus was plowing alone when the Lord met him with saving mercy. He later wrote that he was “enabled by divine light to see the perfect righteousness of Christ and the freeness and richness of His grace.” The change was not merely emotional relief but a clear, humbling vision of Christ as sufficient Savior and righteous Substitute. The promises of Scripture, once doubted, became to him “firmer than a rock.” In that solitary place, God answered misery with mercy, exchanging fear for faith and unbelief for grateful astonishment.

This conversion reflects a recurring pattern in revival history: God bringing personal awakening through ordinary labor, away from crowds, where the heart is laid bare. Backus’s experience also shows Christian heroism of a quiet kind—the bravery to surrender self-reliance and to rest wholly in Christ. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). And, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).

Great Awakening and New England Ministry

The Great Awakening stirred towns and churches across New England with urgent preaching on repentance, the new birth, and the authority of Scripture. Backus’s conversion in 1741 placed him among many who testified that salvation is of grace, not human effort. In time he became a faithful pastor and influential evangelist, calling hearers to trust Christ, to treasure holiness, and to stand firm when faithfulness carried a cost. His life reminds believers that God often begins great usefulness with a single, unseen moment of grace—when a sinner meets the living Christ and rises to walk in newness of life.
