Clean as New Fallen Snow

Frank C. Laubach (1884–1970)

Frank C. Laubach was a missionary educator who served in the Philippines, traveling and teaching in difficult conditions while laboring to learn local languages for the clear communication of the gospel. Working among communities in Mindanao, he faced the strain of isolation, demanding schedules, and the slow work of mastering unfamiliar speech. His heroism was not loud or dramatic, but steady: patient service, careful study, and a willingness to be small so that Christ would be known. Laubach’s life showed that Christian courage is often quiet perseverance, strengthened by a conscience kept tender before God.

April 18, 1930: “Close Friendship with God”

On April 18, 1930, Laubach wrote to a friend, “After an hour of close friendship with God, my soul feels clean as new fallen snow.” The sentence came from ordinary but weighty days—language study, travel, and ministry pressures that could easily push prayer to the margins. Instead, Laubach learned to return daily to God, not as an escape from responsibility, but as the only source of pure motives and lasting strength. Scripture describes this kind of renewal: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). His testimony points to fellowship with God as the root of fruitful labor, where repentance, gratitude, and confidence are restored.

Legacy: “Each One Teach One” Literacy Work

Laubach’s later influence in literacy—often summarized in the phrase “Each One Teach One”—grew from this conviction that God multiplies humble obedience. As he helped people learn to read, he also equipped ordinary believers to teach others, dignifying small acts of service and trusting God for increase. The pattern echoes Jesus’ words: “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Laubach’s story encourages Christians to reject frantic striving, return to prayer, and expect God to renew the heart and spread blessing through faithful, everyday discipleship.
