Called to Witness, Sent to the Poor Manuel Larraín at the Council At the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) in Rome, Bishop Manuel Larraín of Chile rose among the gathered shepherds to press a simple, bracing reminder: the gospel is not carried by clergy alone. Speaking from the pastoral pressures of Latin America—where families often endured poverty, migration, and limited access to education—he urged the Church to equip ordinary believers to confess Christ with clarity and to live His mercy with courage in daily life. A Church of the Baptized Larraín emphasized that baptism commissions every disciple. The home becomes a place of prayer and integrity; the workplace, a field for honest labor and quiet testimony; public life, a space for moral steadiness and neighbor-love. His call aligns with Scripture’s insistence that visible obedience belongs to all God’s people: “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Love Made Visible He challenged the Church to practice a “measurable” love—concrete mercy that can be recognized in protection for the vulnerable, care for the sick, instruction for children, and advocacy for the dignity of the poor. This was not sentiment, but service that costs something. In a world quick to spiritualize suffering, he echoed the biblical demand for embodied faith: “So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.” (James 2:17) Such love, he insisted, stands near the needy rather than speaking about them from a distance. Legacy in Latin America Larraín’s credibility was strengthened by his role in fostering cooperation among bishops across the region, especially through the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), formed in 1955 in Rio de Janeiro. By encouraging shared pastoral strategies, he modeled unity for mission. His appeal reflected the Lord’s own pattern—truth plainly proclaimed, compassion tangibly expressed—so that the Church’s witness would be both faithful and believable: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.” (Matthew 25:40) |
