Jacob Olawale Omoniyi (Ordination, Nigeria, 1967)

On November 19, 1967, Jacob Olawale Omoniyi was ordained to gospel ministry in Nigeria. The ordination was a public recognition of a divine calling that had grown stronger than his limited formal schooling. In a season when hardship and uncertainty weighed on many communities, his setting apart reminded the churches that God often advances His work through those who are willing, teachable, and faithful in small tasks.

Omoniyi’s early ministry was marked by humility and a steady trust that the Lord equips those He calls. “But He gives us more grace. That is why it says: ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’” (James 4:6). Without relying on credentials, he gave himself to Scripture, prayer, and patient service—disciplines that shaped his character before they expanded his influence. As his knowledge increased, Omoniyi became known as both educator and pastor. His steady leadership strengthened churches across his region in southwestern Nigeria, particularly among Baptist congregations connected to Oyo State. He became the first chairman of the Oyo West Baptist Conference, helping to organize cooperative ministry, encourage pastors, and promote sound teaching. Under his servant-hearted oversight, churches were urged toward unity, evangelistic faithfulness, and disciplined congregational life.

Omoniyi’s legacy is often remembered in the simple strength of his pattern: called by God, formed by Scripture, and proven by long obedience. His life continues to commend courage, diligence, and steadfast hope in Christ’s work through ordinary people.
