Brother André Bessette’s Humble Faith Brother André Bessette (1845–1937) On January 6, 1937, Brother André Bessette died in Montreal after decades of quiet service as a brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Many knew him simply as the porter at Collège Notre-Dame, a man of frail health who nevertheless met a steady stream of visitors with patience, prayer, and practical kindness. He did not present himself as important. He listened, encouraged repentance and trust in God, and pointed the hurting toward mercy with a childlike heart. His heroism was not loud. It was the daily courage of constancy: showing up, bearing weakness, and refusing to harden his heart toward the poor, the sick, and the overlooked. In a world that prizes strength and visibility, his life testified that God often works through the lowly and persistent. “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.’” (2 Corinthians 12:9) Montreal and the Rise of Saint Joseph’s Oratory Brother André’s devotion to Saint Joseph and his confidence in God’s help drew people from across Quebec and beyond. Visitors testified that his simple counsel, his prayers, and even the humble gestures associated with his ministry brought them comfort and renewed hope. He urged many to pray, to return to the Lord, and to keep going when answers seemed delayed. Over time, the steady flow of pilgrims and the desire for a dedicated place of prayer helped give rise to Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal, now a landmark in Montreal and a continuing gathering place for worship and intercession. Faith, Mercy, and the Least Brother André’s ministry was marked by a plain, gospel-shaped compassion. He treated the needy not as interruptions but as neighbors to be received. His example echoes Christ’s words: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.” (Matthew 25:40) His story also reinforces the biblical call to prayer that perseveres: “The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.” (James 5:16) Brother André’s enduring witness reminds the Church that steadfast faith and everyday love—offered quietly, consistently, and sincerely—can become a mighty testimony. |
