Born into Bondage, Called to Shepherd

Birth and Bondage

On April 6, 1830, James Augustine Healy was born on a plantation near Macon, Georgia, to Michael Morris Healy, an Irish-born planter, and Mary Eliza, an enslaved woman. Under the laws of the day, the child’s status followed the mother’s condition, so James was counted enslaved. His earliest story therefore sits at the crossroads of sin’s cruel systems and God’s overruling hand, reminding readers that the Lord sees those the world overlooks.

Providence and Education

In time, a door opened for James and his siblings to travel north for schooling, far from the coercion and fear that marked life in slaveholding Georgia. Education became more than a social opportunity; it was a means of calling, shaping his mind and strengthening resolve. Scripture speaks to such hidden guidance: “And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Call to Ministry

Healy pursued preparation for ministry amid the pressures of race, class, and suspicion—burdens intensified in a nation fractured by slavery and its aftermath. Yet hardship did not harden him; it refined him. His steady path into priesthood showed courage without spectacle: perseverance, disciplined study, and a willingness to serve where he was needed rather than where he would be celebrated.

Shepherd in Portland

Ordained a priest and later appointed bishop of Portland, Maine, Healy became the first Black Roman Catholic bishop in America. From Portland, he labored as a pastor to scattered congregations across a demanding region, strengthening churches, encouraging families, and pursuing order and dignity in worship and education. His leadership was marked by quiet fortitude—heroism expressed in patience, steadfast faith, and care for souls amid prejudice. His life also testifies to the gospel’s leveling truth: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).
