Oswald J. Smith (1889–1986)

Born on November 8, 1889, Oswald J. Smith became one of Canada’s most influential voices calling the church back to evangelism and world missions. In an age marked by rapid urban growth and spiritual drift, he carried a steady burden for the lost and a confidence that the gospel is God’s appointed means to rescue sinners and gather a people for His name. His life modeled holy ambition—courage to speak plainly, tenderness toward souls, and perseverance when obedience was costly.

The Peoples Church, Toronto (1925)

In 1925 he founded The Peoples Church in Toronto, Ontario, shaping it into a congregation known for sending and supporting gospel work beyond its own city. Toronto’s growing neighborhoods and immigrant communities sharpened his conviction that local witness and global outreach belong together. Under his pastoral leadership, missions was not treated as a side interest but as a central expression of faithfulness—believers urged to pray with urgency, give with sacrifice, and go with readiness. This was a quiet kind of heroism: building a church whose vision extended to nations many members would never see, yet would faithfully uphold through prayer and generosity.

Preaching, Writing, and Hymnody

Smith’s preaching pressed for decision and devotion, calling Christians to Spirit-empowered witness rather than comfortable religion. His writings likewise urged a bold, compassionate testimony, grounded in Scripture and fueled by prayer. He also poured truth into worship, composing more than 1,200 hymns, including “The Song of the Soul Set Free.” These songs helped congregations sing the gospel with conviction and joy—praise becoming proclamation, and worship becoming a school for faith, repentance, and hope.

Legacy

Oswald J. Smith is remembered for a steady insistence that the church exists to glorify Christ by making Him known. His example continues to challenge believers to hold the rope for those who go, and to be willing—when called—to go themselves.
