A Voice Over the Bricks

John Ajayi Agbona

John Ajayi Agbona was a Nigerian lay worker turned evangelist whose ministry became closely associated with the Christ Apostolic Mission Church of Nigeria. Remembered for unusual steadfastness, he exemplified the quiet heroism of ordinary believers who choose obedience over security.

The Call of April 21, 1947

On April 21, 1947, Agbona turned twenty-seven. He spent the day laying bricks—honest, steady labor that promised daily bread. In the midst of the work, he heard a clear voice summoning him to gospel ministry. He did not treat the moment as a distraction, nor as a private impression to be ignored. He received it as a divine interruption and responded with action.

His decision carried real cost. Turning from dependable income to the uncertainties of itinerant service required faith, self-denial, and courage. His obedience echoed the readiness of the prophet: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?’ And I said: ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8). For Agbona, calling was not merely a feeling; it was a command to be followed.

Church Planting and Community Strengthening

In the years that followed, his faithful labor helped establish about eighty churches across five nations, extending the witness of Christ beyond his home region and strengthening scattered believers through preaching, prayer, and pastoral care. He also supported community development through schools in Nigeria, expressing a practical love that served families, trained minds, and stabilized local life. His work reflected a gospel that addresses both soul and neighbor.

Prayer, Healings, and Spiritual Reputation

Many testified that Agbona’s preaching and prayers were accompanied by remarkable healings, pointing listeners away from personality and toward the living God. Such accounts were often linked with the biblical promise: “And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up.” (James 5:15). His legacy endures as a reminder that God still works through surrendered, obedient servants who choose faithfulness when no one is watching.
