A Messenger of Living Faith

Peter Böhler (1712–1775)

Born December 31, 1712, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Peter Böhler became a Moravian pastor whose quiet steadfastness strengthened wavering hearts. Frankfurt, a busy trade city on the Main River, was a crossroads of ideas as well as commerce, and Böhler’s early formation prepared him for a life of gospel-minded travel, patient counsel, and plainspoken trust in Christ.

Frankfurt, Herrnhut, and Moravian Zeal

The Moravians were known for warm devotion to Jesus, disciplined fellowship, and missionary courage. Their communities prized prayer, Scripture, and joyful witness, not as religious performance but as the fruit of a changed heart. Böhler embodied this spirit: earnest yet gentle, convinced that saving faith rests on Christ’s finished work and produces both humility and holy boldness.

A Steadying Word to John Wesley

At just 25, Böhler met John Wesley during Wesley’s season of spiritual struggle and unsettled assurance. In conversations in England—amid the earnest seeking of societies and small-group gatherings—Böhler urged Wesley to look away from self-measurement and to trust Christ wholeheartedly. He pressed the biblical promise that faith brings real peace with God, not merely religious striving: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)

Böhler’s counsel was both tender and courageous. It takes a certain heroism to speak plainly to a respected leader, yet Böhler did so without harshness, urging Wesley to seek saving faith and to proclaim it. He is often remembered for the bracing counsel, “Preach faith till you have it; and then, because you have it, you will preach faith,” calling Wesley to obey Scripture even while longing for deeper assurance.

Gospel Joy and Enduring Influence

Böhler’s emphasis was not on human merit but on grace received by faith: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8) His witness helped prepare the way for Wesley’s later awakening and lasting ministry. Böhler’s legacy reminds believers that one faithful, Scripture-shaped voice—marked by humility, clarity, and love—can steady many souls toward Christ and kindle renewed gospel joy.
