Wadford Association (January 5, 1743)

On January 5, 1743, George Whitefield joined hands in fellowship with Welsh revival leaders at Wadford, Wales, helping form what is often remembered as the first Methodist association. The revival had already swept through fields, market squares, and humble meetinghouses; now it gained a settled pattern of counsel, prayer, and shared oversight. This gathering did not quench zeal—it aimed to guide it, so awakened hearts would be fed with truth and shepherded with care.

George Whitefield and the Welsh Evangelists

Whitefield, famed for open-air preaching and fearless travel, brought encouragement to laborers who had faced ridicule, exhaustion, and division. Alongside him stood leaders of the Welsh awakening—men such as Howell Harris and Daniel Rowland—whose preaching stirred repentance and living faith across villages and valleys. Their heroism was not in swords or slogans, but in steadfast proclamation, patience under criticism, and willingness to be corrected for the sake of Christ’s name.

Doctrine, Discipline, and Pastoral Care

The association offered structure: shared commitment to sound doctrine, mutual accountability, and disciplined pastoral care for converts forming small societies. In a season when strong emotions could drift into confusion, ordered fellowship helped protect the flock and steady the work. Scripture commends this kind of watchful leadership: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account.” (Hebrews 13:17)

Christ at the Center

By meeting together, these ministers sought to keep the revival from becoming a stage for personalities. They labored to make much of Christ, not of gifted men. Their humility echoed the apostolic warning against man-centered glory: “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” (1 Corinthians 3:7) The Wadford fellowship stands as a reminder that lasting fruit often comes through Spirit-led boldness joined to careful order—faith working through love, zeal governed by truth, and courage strengthened by brotherly unity.
