A Call to Biblical Faithfulness Rousas John Rushdoony (1916–2001) On February 8, 2001, Rousas John Rushdoony went to be with the Lord, leaving behind a vigorous testimony that Christ’s Word speaks to every area of life. A Presbyterian minister and prolific writer, he became known for urging the church to recover confidence in the whole counsel of God, not only for personal devotion but for public faithfulness. Rushdoony’s early ministry included work among Native communities in the American West, where patient preaching, pastoral steadiness, and practical mercy were tested far from academic comfort. Those years helped shape his conviction that Christianity is not a private hobby but a comprehensive way of life under Christ the King. His labor reflected the Scripture he cherished: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” (2 Timothy 3:16). Friends and critics alike noted his industry—thousands of lectures, articles, and books—pursued with a sense of stewardship before God. Chalcedon Foundation Rushdoony founded the Chalcedon Foundation in California to confront secular humanism with a robust confidence in Scripture. The ministry served as a publishing and teaching hub, equipping pastors, parents, and laymen to think Christianly about education, law, history, and culture. Its name, drawn from the Council of Chalcedon (A.D. 451), signaled a concern for doctrinal clarity about Christ as true God and true man—convictions meant to shape everyday obedience. The work required a kind of quiet heroism: long-term faithfulness, willingness to be misunderstood, and endurance through controversy without surrendering the conviction that God’s Word is sufficient. The Institutes of Biblical Law and Legacy Through works such as The Institutes of Biblical Law, Rushdoony urged believers to recover God’s moral law as a blessing for families, churches, and nations. He argued that grace does not erase God’s standards but renews the heart to love them. Whatever one’s disagreements, his courage, industry, and insistence on the authority of God’s Word continue to challenge the church toward faithful obedience. His legacy echoes: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) |
