A Bishop’s Call to Holy Service

Charles Gore (1853–1932)

On January 17, 1932, Charles Gore died in London at the age of 78. Remembered as a pastor, author, and bishop, he combined a deep love for worship with a steady concern for everyday holiness. His public ministry showed a kind of quiet heroism: the courage to teach, to shepherd, and to urge Christians toward costly obedience when it would have been easier to stay comfortable or silent.

Gore served the Church of England in demanding seasons of social change, including episcopal leadership in industrial and university settings. Whether addressing crowded city neighborhoods or learned halls, he pressed one conviction: devotion to Christ must never be reduced to private feeling, but must shape the conscience, the use of money, and the treatment of the weak.

Community of the Resurrection

Among Gore’s enduring contributions was his role in founding the Community of the Resurrection, an Anglican religious community devoted to disciplined prayer, shared life, and mission. The community took root in the late nineteenth century and later established itself at Mirfield in West Yorkshire, where common worship and pastoral outreach were held together rather than separated.

Gore’s support for this life of ordered devotion underscored a simple truth: the church’s strength is renewed when believers gather around Scripture, confession, the Lord’s Table, and persevering prayer. From such reverence comes endurance for ministry, and from such fellowship comes humility—leaders learning to be servants.

Witness in Word and Deed

Gore urged Christians to take seriously the wounds of society—poverty, injustice, and neglect—without surrendering the priority of faith. His counsel was practical: compassion must become action, and action must be guarded by prayer so that service does not turn into pride or mere activism.

“Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” (James 1:27)

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)

Gore’s life still calls believers to steady faith, clean hands, and a willing heart—reverent before God, and generous toward neighbor.
