Good News Translation
These five men surrounded Judas, protecting him with their own armor and showering the enemy with arrows and thunderbolts. The enemy forces then became so confused and bewildered that they broke ranks, and the Jews cut them to pieces,

New Revised Standard Version
Two of them took Maccabeus between them, and shielding him with their own armor and weapons, they kept him from being wounded. They showered arrows and thunderbolts on the enemy, so that, confused and blinded, they were thrown into disorder and cut to pieces.

Contemporary English Version
They formed a circle around Judas and protected him with their shields and weapons, while sending a flood of arrows and lightning bolts at Timothy's army. Blinded and confused, the enemy troops scattered in every direction and were cut down.
