1 Maccabees 8:4
Good News Translation
By careful planning and persistence, they had conquered the whole country, even though it was far from Rome. They had overcome the kings from distant lands who had fought against them; they had defeated them so badly that the survivors had to pay annual taxes.

New Revised Standard Version
and how they had gained control of the whole region by their planning and patience, even though the place was far distant from them. They also subdued the kings who came against them from the ends of the earth, until they crushed them and inflicted great disaster on them; the rest paid them tribute every year.

Contemporary English Version
In fact, by patient and careful planning, they have conquered all of Spain, even though it is a great distance from Rome. The Romans have crushed the kings of every nation that attacked them, and they have forced the kings who survived to pay taxes to them each year.

By planning and persistence they subjugated the whole region, although it was very remote from their own. They also subjugated the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth until they crushed them and inflicted on them severe defeat. The rest paid tribute to them every year.
