1 Maccabees 8:1
Good News Translation
Judas had heard about the Romans and their reputation as a military power. He knew that they welcomed all those who joined them as allies and that those who came to them could be sure of the friendship of Rome.

Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were very strong and were well-disposed toward all who made an alliance with them, that they pledged friendship to those who came to them,

This is what Judas heard about the Romans: The Romans are a famous and mighty nation. But they are kind and friendly to their allies and to other countries that ask them for help.
