Good News Translation
All the surrounding nations now tried to destroy them. They thought that the Jews had no leaders or allies and that the time was ripe to annihilate them and put an end to their history.

New Revised Standard Version
All the nations around them tried to destroy them, for they said, “They have no leader or helper. Now therefore let us make war on them and blot out the memory of them from humankind.”

Contemporary English Version
because the Gentiles around there were saying, "The Jews have no ruler or general. Let's destroy them and make the world forget they ever lived."
